The statue is a memorial to José Gervasio Artigas, a major Uruguayan national hero and independence fighter. It was created by the renowned Paraguayan sculptor Juan Manuel Blanes and unveiled in 1934. The statue honors the close historical relationship between Paraguay and Uruguay.
